Infant & Baby Swim
Lessons
Little Fins offers two approaches to infant and baby swim instruction, each
designed for different family needs and developmental stages. Whether you’re
focused on building life-saving survival skills or introducing your baby to water
through play and bonding, we have a program that fits your goals. Your choice
depends on what matters most right now: teaching your baby self-rescue
responses through intensive one-on-one instruction, or exploring water
together through songs, games, and sensory activities. Both programs
build water confidence, they just take different paths to get there.
Infant Survival Swim Lessons: Building Life-Saving Skills
Babies between 6 and 24 months are naturally ready to learn water survival skills. Their bodies still carry reflexes from the womb, like eyes that stay open underwater, natural buoyancy, and an instinctive comfort in water that gradually fades as they grow older. This developmental window is your opportunity to teach skills that last a lifetime.
At Little Fins Swim School, we teach infant survival swimming because we know how important water safety is for families here in Colorado Springs. Whether you have a backyard pool, visit Prospect Lake, or vacation at mountain lakes throughout Colorado, your baby will encounter water throughout their childhood. Our goal is simple: to give your child the reflexive skills they need to stay safe while building confidence and joy around water.
That’s why we start early with survival instruction to work with your baby’s natural development rather than against it. The Swim-Float-Swim method teaches foundational self-rescue skills during the months when babies learn them most naturally, creating a foundation for confident, safe swimming that grows with your child. While no program can make a child “drown-proof,” early survival skills significantly improve a child’s safety around water.

Aqua Babies: Parent & Me Water Introduction
Not every parent is ready to dive into survival training right away. Some families simply want time to build trust in the water first, introducing their baby to the pool in a gentle, playful way while growing their own confidence together. That’s exactly what Aqua Babies provides.
Aqua Babies is our parent-participation program for babies and toddlers from newborn through preschool age. These 45-minute classes combine songs, sensory play, games, and developmental water activities that help your baby become comfortable in the pool while you’re right there with them. Each month brings a new theme with fresh songs, instruments, and activities, keeping classes engaging while building foundational water skills through repetition.
The primary goal during Aqua Babies is not survival skills, although some safety and survival techniques are introduced at a slower pace. Babies under 6 months receive only gentle water introduction without submersions, and the program emphasizes bonding and confidence over technique. This is your special time together, creating positive water memories while your baby’s brain develops through sensory-rich experiences.
Aqua Babies works beautifully for families with newborns or babies under 6 months who aren’t yet developmentally ready for survival instruction, parents who want to participate actively in their baby’s water introduction, or anyone preferring a playful, social approach to building water confidence. Many local families start with Aqua Babies when their baby is very young, then transition to one-on-one survival lessons around 6 months when babies physical readiness for Swim-Float-Swim training.
Classes run year-round at our heated indoor pools. You can book a single class to try the program or sign up for recurring weekly sessions.

Choosing Between Infant Survival Lessons and Aqua Babies
Both programs introduce babies to water and build confidence. Both serve families well. The difference is in approach and goals.
Infant Survival Swim Lessons
might be the right fit if your baby is at least 6 months old with good neck control and your primary goal is teaching self-rescue skills. This program works well for families who want intensive, focused instruction on life-saving techniques and are comfortable with one-on-one instructor-led lessons where parents watch from the pool deck rather than being in the water. Many families choose survival lessons when they have a pool at home, live near water, or frequently visit pools during family activities.
Aqua Babies
Aqua Babies could be perfect for your family if your baby is under 6 months, or if you have a toddler or preschooler up to age 5 and want to participate actively in your child’s water introduction. This program prioritizes bonding, play, and building early water comfort in a social, group-class environment with songs and games. Parents often choose Aqua Babies when they’d like their child to develop positive water associations before moving to more intensive training, or simply because they want that special in-the-water time together.
If you’re not sure which program fits your family best, call us at (719) 344-5328. We’re happy to discuss your baby’s age, your goals, and which approach makes the most sense for where you are right now.
Why Colorado Springs Families Choose Little Fins
Choosing where your baby learns water skills is an important decision. Many swim schools offer “baby swimming” that’s primarily playtime, while others focus only on parent-child bonding. At Little Fins, we offer both survival-focused training and play-based introduction, so families can choose the program that matches their needs. Here’s why families throughout the area trust Little Fins for infant and baby swim instruction.

For survival-focused families, we don't use gimmicks or trends. The Swim-Float-Swim technique has proven, safety-focused approach documented success teaching genuine self-rescue skills to infants and toddlers. Your baby learns survival first, recreational swimming later.
Multiple Program Options
We recognize that not every family has the same goals or timeline. Aqua Babies provides gentle introduction and parent bonding for newborns through preschoolers, while Infant Survival Swim Lessons teach intensive self-rescue skills starting at 6 months. You can choose the path that fits your family.
Exclusively One-on-One Instruction for Survival Lessons
Infant survival lessons are always taught 1-on-1, with your baby receiving 100% of the instructor's focus for the entire lesson. The precise techniques and constant adaptation that survival swimming requires simply can't happen when an instructor's attention is divided.
Specialized Training and Developmentally Appropriate Teaching
Every Little Fins instructor completes focused training specific to their program area. Survival instructors learn precise physical techniques using the Swim-Float-Swim method and Infant Survival (SS) method of teaching. We teach each swimmer using infant reflexes and appropriate skill progressions for infants ranging from 6-4 months and toddlers ages 2-4 years old. Aqua Babies instructors understand how to create engaging, age-appropriate activities that build water confidence through play. Whether your baby is 2 months or 18 months, our instructors know how to work effectively with their developmental stage.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age should my baby start survival swim lessons?
We begin infant survival instruction at 6 months old, when babies have sufficient neck control and have reached developmental readiness. The optimal learning window extends through 24 months, though we successfully teach toddlers through age 4 using these same survival-focused techniques. Starting earlier within this window typically means faster skill acquisition.
What age can my baby start Aqua Babies?
Aqua Babies welcomes babies from birth through age 5. Newborns and babies under 6 months receive gentle water introduction without submersions, focusing on sensory exploration and bonding. Older babies and toddlers participate in more active movement and skill-building games appropriate for their developmental stage.
How is infant survival swimming different from Aqua Babies?
Infant survival swimming specifically teaches self-rescue skills using the Swim-Float-Swim method through intensive one-on-one instruction without parent participation. Your baby learns what to do if they accidentally fall into water, building muscle memory for life-saving responses. Aqua Babies is a parent-participation program focusing on water acclimation, play, bonding, and early confidence through songs, games, and sensory activities. Both build water comfort, but survival lessons prioritize emergency self-rescue while Aqua Babies prioritizes positive water experiences and developmental benefits.
Can I participate in infant survival swim lessons with my baby?
Infant survival swim lessons at Little Fins are instructor-led rather than parent-participation classes. This allows the instructor to use specific techniques and maintain consistency in training methods. Parents watch from the pool deck and are involved in practice recommendations for home. For parent-participation water introduction, Aqua Babies is specifically designed for you and your baby to be in the water together, creating bonding time while building early water confidence.
Can my baby do both Aqua Babies and survival lessons?
Absolutely. Many families start with Aqua Babies when their baby is very young, then transition to one-on-one survival lessons around 6 months. Some families continue Aqua Babies for the social and bonding experience while also doing survival training. We’re happy to discuss which combination makes sense for your family’s goals and your baby’s developmental stage
