Trial Assessment Swim Lesson
Choosing the right swim school for your child starts with seeing how they respond in the water and experiencing the instruction firsthand. A Trial Assessment Swim Lesson at Little Fins gives you exactly that: a focused 15-minute session where your child works one-on-one with an experienced instructor while you watch from the observation area and see our teaching approach in action. Your child spends real time in the pool with a dedicated teacher who evaluates their current abilities, introduces them to our methods, and helps them feel comfortable in our warm-water environment. You get to see whether Little Fins feels like the right fit for your family before committing to ongoing lessons.
You’re making an important decision about your child’s water safety education, and a trial lesson gives you the information you need to make that choice confidently. Whether your child has never been in a pool or swims competently already, the assessment provides clear insight into where they are now and what comes next in their swim education. You’ll see our one-on-one teaching model in practice, meet the instructor who might work with your child regularly, and understand exactly how Little Fins builds water confidence and safety skills that last.

What Happens During Your Trial Assessment Swim Lesson
The Trial Assessment Lesson is designed to accomplish several things in 15 minutes: introduce your child to Little Fins’ teaching approach, evaluate their current water abilities, and give you clear information about appropriate next steps. Here’s how the session works from arrival to completion.
Arrival and Pre-Lesson Discussion
Plan to arrive a few minutes early so your child can change into their swimsuit and get comfortable in the facility. The instructor meets you poolside for a brief 1-3 minute conversation before the lesson begins. This conversation covers your child’s previous swim experience (if any), your specific goals for swim instruction, and any particular concerns you’d like the instructor to address during the assessment.
Parents often mention whether their child has anxiety around water, physical considerations that affect movement, or specific skills they hope to develop. This information helps the instructor tailor the assessment to your child’s needs right from the start. If your child is younger than three or not yet potty trained, the instructor will confirm you’ve brought the required Happy Nappy swim diaper.
The In-Pool Assessment
Your child then spends approximately 10 minutes in the water with the instructor for a true one-on-one assessment. This is guided assessment time, where the instructor observes your swimmer to understand their comfort level, assess current abilities, and evaluate readiness for foundational skills appropriate to their age and experience.
The instructor might evaluate how your child enters the water, whether they’re comfortable getting their face wet and how they respond to floating on their back. For children with previous swim experience, the assessment includes observing their stroke mechanics, breathing patterns, and overall water confidence.
Throughout these 10 minutes, you’re welcome to watch from our observation area. Many parents find this viewing time valuable because they can see exactly how Little Fins instructors communicate with young swimmers, how quickly children respond to the teaching approach, and what the one-on-one experience actually looks like in practice.
Post-Lesson Recommendations
After your child exits the pool, plan to return poolside 2-5 minutes before the scheduled end time for a brief discussion with the instructor. This conversation typically lasts 2-5 minutes and covers what the instructor observed during the assessment, where your child currently sits skill-wise, and specific recommendations for ongoing instruction.
You’ll also discuss lesson format options that suit your child’s current needs. Some swimmers benefit most from traditional one-on-one lessons, while others thrive in the collaborative environment of Pod lessons.
Why Colorado Springs Families Start with a Trial Lesson
Committing to swim lessons represents an investment of time, money, and trust. Parents want to know they’re making the right choice before scheduling weekly lessons that extend over months or years. The Trial Assessment Swim Lesson answers the questions that matter most when you’re evaluating swim schools.
See One-on-One Instruction in Action
Reading about Little Fins’ commitment to individualized teaching is different from watching it happen. During the trial lesson, you observe how Little Fins’ one-on-one approach and instructor interaction feels for your child.
This matters particularly for young children, anxious swimmers, or kids who need adaptive teaching approaches. When the instructor works exclusively with your child, they can move at exactly the right pace, repeat explanations in different ways until the concept clicks, and provide the specific physical support your swimmer needs in that moment.
Experience the Heated Pool Environment
Colorado Springs weather varies dramatically throughout the year, and most outdoor pools operate seasonally. Little Fins maintains heated indoor pools at both locations year-round, keeping water temperatures at 94 degrees or warmer. The trial lesson lets your child experience this comfortable environment firsthand. The controlled temperature also means lessons continue consistently regardless of season, building the regular attendance pattern that produces reliable progress.
Meet Little Fins Instructors
This trial provides a genuine introduction to Little Fins’ teaching staff and their approach to working with young swimmers. Every Little Fins instructor completes specialized training in water safety and survival techniques, including Infant Safety Survival (ISS). They’re also certified in CPR and understand child development stages that affect learning. During the trial, you can assess the instructor’s communication style, patience level, and ability to connect with your child.
Get Honest Skill Assessment
The trial lesson provides realistic feedback about your child’s current abilities and what skill development looks like going forward. You receive straightforward information about where your swimmer is now and what comes next. This honesty helps families set appropriate expectations and understand the commitment required for genuine water competency.
Understand Little Fins' Teaching Philosophy
Every swim school emphasizes different aspects of instruction. Some focus primarily on competitive stroke development while others prioritize play and water introduction. Little Fins builds its program around water safety and survival skills first, then layers in stroke mechanics and competitive techniques as children progress.
The trial lesson demonstrates this philosophy in practice. You’ll see the instructor emphasizing skills like back floating, breath control, and underwater comfort before worrying about perfect freestyle form. This foundation-first approach ensures children develop the abilities that keep them safe around water before moving to advanced techniques.
What You Need to Know Before Your Trial Lesson
Registration and Scheduling
All children participating in Little Fins programs must complete registration before their first lesson. This quick online process collects basic information and creates your family’s account in our scheduling system. Once registered, you can book your Trial Assessment Swim Lesson directly through our online calendar at either the Garden of the Gods or Union Boulevard location.
You can also call (719) 344-5328 to schedule by phone if you prefer speaking with someone directly about available times and locations.
What to Bring
Your child needs a swimsuit and towel for the trial lesson. If your swimmer is not yet potty trained, you must bring a Happy Nappy swim diaper or purchase one on site. Regular swim diapers or swim trunks with built-in liners don’t meet our facility requirements. Happy Nappy diapers are specifically designed to prevent accidents in the pool while allowing comfortable movement for swimming.
Goggles aren’t necessary for the trial assessment, and instructors typically don’t use them during initial evaluation. You’re welcome to bring them if your child feels more comfortable having them available, but don’t worry if you forget them at home.
What Happens After the Trial
Following your trial lesson, you’ll discuss potential next steps with the instructor and have the opportunity to discuss and explore ongoing lesson options if Little Fins feels like the right fit. Our team can help you explore lesson format options (traditional one-on-one, Pod lessons, or other programs), discuss scheduling availability at your preferred location, and answer questions about pricing and commitment.
There’s no pressure to commit immediately. Some families schedule their first lesson package right after the trial, while others prefer to go home and discuss options before making decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long is the Trial Assessment Lesson?
The trial lesson runs 15 minutes total, which includes a brief pre-lesson discussion, approximately 10 minutes of in-pool assessment time with the instructor, and a post-lesson conversation about recommendations and next steps.
Is the trial lesson really one-on-one instruction?
Yes. Your child works exclusively with one instructor during the entire in-pool portion of the trial.
What age can children do a trial lesson?
Trial lessons work for children starting around 6 months old through elementary age. We also offer trial assessments for adult learners who want to experience our teaching approach before committing to ongoing lessons. The instructor adapts the assessment to your child’s specific age and developmental stage.
Will the trial lesson instructor become our regular teacher if we continue with lessons?
Possibly. Depending on scheduling and availability, the instructor who conducts your trial assessment might be available for your preferred ongoing lesson times. If not, Little Fins will match you with another qualified instructor whose schedule aligns with yours. All Little Fins instructors receive the same specialized training and follow the same teaching philosophy.
What if my child is afraid of water?
Water anxiety is common and something Little Fins instructors work with regularly. During the trial, the instructor will assess your child’s specific comfort level and introduce activities designed to build confidence gradually. The post-lesson discussion will include recommendations for addressing anxiety through ongoing lessons and realistic timelines for progress based on what the instructor observed.
