What Is the Swim–Float–Swim® Method?

The Swim-Float-Swim® method is one of the most effective approaches to teaching water safety and survival swimming skills to young children. But what exactly is it, and why does it work so well?

How It Works

The Swim-Float-Swim® technique teaches children a sequence of survival skills: swim a short distance, roll onto their back to float and rest, then roll back over to continue swimming. This cycle can be repeated until the child reaches safety.

Why It’s Effective

Unlike traditional swim lessons that focus primarily on stroke technique, the Swim-Float-Swim® method prioritizes survival skills. A child who falls into water unexpectedly needs to know how to:

  • Orient themselves in the water
  • Swim toward safety
  • Rest by floating when tired
  • Continue swimming until they reach the wall or shore

This method builds true water independence by giving children the skills they need to save themselves in an emergency situation.

Age-Appropriate Learning

The Swim-Float-Swim® method can be adapted for children as young as 6 months old. At Little Fins Swim School, our certified instructors are trained in this proven technique and tailor the approach to each child’s developmental stage.
