Have you ever wanted to be a Mermaid? This popular Activity is taking Swimming to a new level of fun.

Mermaid swimming, also known as mermaiding, is a fun and magical way to experience swimming. When swimming, the mermaid typically wears a monofin and tail skin. Monofins are one large swim fin that connects both feet and the tail skin is a stretchy fabric worn over the monofin and legs to give the mermaid appearance. Mermaiding is increasingly popular among kids and adults alike.

Mermaiding Is Good for You

There are many physical benefits of mermaiding, including, increased:

  • breath control,

  • stamina,

  • strength,

  • body awareness

Safe Mermaiding is Very Important

Like any water activity, mermaiding has inherent risks that should be recognized and mitigated.

Here are three ways to minimize risk while enjoying mermaid swimming.

  1. Know foundational swimming skills.
Mermaid swim safety starts before putting on a tail. A swimmer needs to know how to roll into a back float and swim the length of the pool. A great place to start is by enrolling in swim lessons to build foundational skills such as floating, freestyle, and dolphin kick.

  2. Choose mermaid equipment wisely.
Not all mermaid tails and monofins are created equally. Some of the monofins found online are made poorly and cause hazards when they do not stay on a person's feet properly, and the brittle plastic can easily snap and be dangerous. Mermaid tail skins that are found online can also be hazardous because they are loose fitting causing excess drag unsuitable for beginner mermaids. For beginner mermaids, some recommended brands are Fin Fun and Suntails. Both of these companies prioritize safety and quality.

  3. Enroll in a local mermaid class.
Mermaiding is likely happening in your own backyard; you just have to look. Mermaid classes help swimmers build their strength, endurance, breath control, and confidence! In mermaid classes, swimmers learn important safety skills, conditioning exercises, and mermaid tricks, all while having a fun and magical time.

Mermaid swimming is a great opportunity to boost swimming skills and have fun. Little Fins Swim School offers courses for both foundational safety skills and mermaiding. Now, dive in and discover the joys of swimming as a magical mermaid.

Mermaiding is considered by some to be a sport, but swimmers need to learn key safety skills to remain safe while swimming in tails.
