Infant Survival Swim Lessons
How old do you teach Infant Survival?
In the swimming world an infant is 6 months (developmentally) up to 24 months old.
Why infants?
Experts say infancy is the prime time to teach children how to keep afloat and swim in the water, because they possess reflexes in water that older children and adults do not. These reflexes keep their eyes open underwater and most times prevent them from swallowing water. At the same time, their experience in the womb makes water more familiar, and the air between their cells gives them more buoyancy.
Swimming Makes Babies Smarter
A study in Iceland reported that children who participated in swimming lessons as infants outperformed children who had not in tests on motor function skills, to include:
Gripping
Reaching
Balance
And, cognitive skills, emotional skills and social skills. The research found that the four-year-olds who had completed formal swimming lessons two hours a week for just four months as babies scored higher on tests of prehension and static balance.
