How soon should you teach your baby to swim?

Swimming is an important life skill for many people. Not only does it give a sense of reassurance around water, but it’s also a fun way to keep fit. For parents, taking your little one to swimming lessons is a great way to bond, and feel more comfortable and confident when you’re able to take them to the beach or out in nature.

Understandably, the idea of dunking a newborn under the water, even with supervision, is a little daunting. But is there a right time to start taking them to swimming lessons? Let’s take a look.

When you feel ready

Bath time is a great time to get your baby comfortable in the water.

Firstly, the most important thing is that you’re following what’s right for you and your child. There’s a lot to contend with when you have a new baby, and if the idea of getting in the pool just adds to your plate, then it’s ok to wait.

Bath times are an excellent opportunity to start building up your confidence. Once your little one is happy splashing around in the water at home, they’re probably ready to take a dip in a swimming pool. On the other hand, if they love the water from day one, and you’re happy too, there’s no minimum age they need to be to swim – but it’s crucial that you’re supervised by a professional that first time.

If you’re at all unsure, you can ask your physician for advice. Babies who were born prematurely may need to wait a little longer. If it’s mom taking the baby swimming, then it’s also important that she’s in good physical health too.

When baby swimming lessons start

If you’re unclear on what is safe, then contact a professional instructor, who will be able to advise you on when your baby can join a class. At Little Fins, we accept babies from newborn but we won’t submerge your child’s face until they’re 6 months old.

Some parents prefer to wait until they can partake in every stage of the class, whereas others just want to get in the water – there’s no right or wrong way.

What are the benefits of swimming for babies?

So why would you put a newborn in the water? Well, swimming has lots of benefits for infants as they grow, including:

  • Improved coordination

  • Improved muscle strength

  • Bonding with you as the parent

  • Strengthening the heart and lungs

  • Better sleep

  • Bigger appetite

  • Confidence

When kids learn to swim as toddlers, they grow up with a confidence around water that is harder to gain if they don’t learn until they’re older. Plus, it means you’ll know that they can help themselves if something did happen around water whilst you’re on vacation, or just out in nature.

What should you pack when swimming with a baby?

Once you feel ready to take the plunge, you’ll need to invest in a few things to take with you. Firstly, you’ll need a high-quality swim diaper, to avoid any accidents in the water. You’ll also probably want to pick out a cute swimming costume or trunks to complete your baby’s outfit. You’ll also need towels for both of you, shampoo and shower gel, and a swimming cap if you want one. At Little Fins, we only use and recommend Happy Nappy swim diapers. We have tons of colors, styles and sizes that you can purchase at our locations. They are also available online.

Remember, it’s normal to feel a little apprehensive when swimming with your child for the first time, but it’s meant to be fun. If you’re at all unsure, speak to the instructor, who can help you embrace and enjoy your time in the water.
